Deck and fence staining in Libertyville, IL

Libertyville has a mix of older homes near downtown and 1960s-to-1990s subdivisions with mature trees. That means a lot of cedar decks and pergolas on the older lots around Milwaukee Avenue, shaded yards near the Des Plaines River trail that hold mildew, and privacy fences on the newer subdivisions off Route 176. We see the same three problems on most of them: the deck was never sealed, the fence was blasted with high pressure, or someone stained over gray wood and it peeled. All three are fixable, and none of them mean the wood is done.

We are based here in Libertyville and run the whole county from it. Recent work has taken us to Gurnee for deck restoration, fence staining in Mundelein, Indian Creek and Vernon Hills. Wherever you are between Antioch and Buffalo Grove, there is no trip charge.

Our most requested jobs are deck staining on cedar and treated decks, cedar fence staining, and full deck restoration on decks with a failed solid stain. We also handle pergolas and gazebos, composite deck cleaning and, for the lake towns, dock and pier staining.

The stain tones people pick most

All available as semi-transparent or semi-solid. Text a photo and we will suggest two that suit your wood and house.

Natural cedarTransparent to semi-transparent, shows the grain
Honey goldWarm semi-transparent, most popular on cedar
RedwoodSemi-transparent, classic deck tone
WalnutSemi-solid, hides older weathering
Driftwood graySemi-solid or solid, modern look on fences

Where to find us

How a staining job goes

Two visits, sometimes three, because the wood has to dry between the wash and the stain. Anyone who does it in one afternoon is staining wet wood.

  1. Walk the deck with youWe look at the boards, rails, stairs and any soft spots, and confirm the stain type and tone before anything gets wet.
  2. Clean and brightenA sodium percarbonate deck cleaner lifts gray oxidized wood, mildew and old failed finish. A brightener follows to neutralize and open the grain.
  3. Dry and sandTwo to three dry days depending on weather. Raised grain and rough spots get a light sand so the stain goes on even.
  4. Stain and back-brushApplied by pad or sprayer and immediately back-brushed into the wood. Rails, spindles and stair risers are brushed by hand.
  5. Second coat where it countsHorizontal boards that take the sun and foot traffic get a second pass once the first has soaked in. Rails usually need one.

When we work

Our season runs roughly late April through October. Stain needs the wood dry, temperatures between about 50 and 90 degrees, and 24 to 48 hours without rain afterward. In Lake County that means spring and early fall are the best windows, with midsummer jobs scheduled around heat and pop-up storms. We book spring work early because the good weeks fill fast.

Stain types explained

  • Transparent and toner: Shows all the grain, least UV protection, shortest life. Best on new cedar and hardwood.
  • Semi-transparent: Our most common choice. Adds color, shows grain, three to four years on horizontals.
  • Semi-solid: More pigment, hides weathering and mismatched boards, still shows some texture. Good on older decks and fences.
  • Solid: Opaque like paint but breathable. Longest UV life, but it will eventually peel and needs stripping to change. We use it when you want a color.

Questions we get from Libertyville homeowners

What areas do you serve?

Every town in Lake County, Illinois, from Antioch and Winthrop Harbor down to Buffalo Grove and Barrington, plus southeast Wisconsin within about 40 minutes of the state line: Kenosha, Pleasant Prairie, Twin Lakes, Silver Lake, Powers Lake, Lake Geneva, Racine, Burlington and the towns between them. How do I get a quote?

Text a few photos of the deck or fence to (224) 944-8652 with your town and a rough size. Most quotes go back the same day. For bigger restoration jobs we will come look in person.

Do I have to be home?

No. We need the deck or fence clear, access to a spigot, and a way to reach you with questions. Most jobs happen while people are at work.

What stain brands do you use?

Professional-grade penetrating oils and oil-hybrids for most work, and a quality acrylic solid stain when you want color. We will tell you exactly what we are putting on your wood and why.

Do you clean before staining?

Always. Stain on dirty or gray wood fails within a year. Every staining job includes a wash, brightener and a moisture check before we open a can.

Is it too late in the fall to stain?

Usually not until late October. We need dry wood, daytime temperatures above about 50, and nights that stay above 40 for two days after. If it is too cold we will tell you and book you first in spring.
