One region, a lot of different wood

Lake County runs from the Lake Michigan shore to the Chain O'Lakes, and the wood behaves differently across it. Shore towns like Highland Park and Winthrop Harbor get lake-effect wind and sun that dry decks out fast. The lake communities up north, Fox Lake, Antioch and Lake Villa, have docks, piers and waterfront decks that stay damp. The wooded south and west, Riverwoods, Long Grove and Hawthorn Woods, have shade and mildew. And the big central subdivisions in Gurnee, Vernon Hills and Buffalo Grove have thousands of original builder decks that are due for Deck restoration.

North of the state line the wood is much the same, but the lakes change the job. The Kenosha County chain — Twin Lakes, Silver Lake, Powers Lake and Paddock Lake — plus Lake Geneva in Walworth County means a lot of piers, boat-lift decking and shore steps that come out of the water each fall. The Kenosha and Racine lakefront neighborhoods get the same lake-effect weathering as Zion and Winthrop Harbor.
